The League of Women Voters Grosse Pointe held the Fourth Annual Running and Winning workshop for the young high school women of the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.
Former Detroit City Council member, Sheila Cockerel was the lunchtime speaker this year. Former Michigan State Senator and current Wayne County Commissioner, Martha Scott was the opening speaker on Friday morning.
Many local officials agreed to participate in the interview sessions with the girls during the morning part of the program. Officials who attended were Councilwoman Therese Joseph, Grosse Pointe Farms; Councilwoman Laurie Arora, Grosse Pointe Park; and Councilwoman Vivian Sawicki, Harper Woods. From the Grosse Pointe School Board were Joan Dindoffer, Judy Gafa and Cindy Pangborn. Harper Woods School Board was represented by Joan Mannino.
Dr. Suzanne Klein, Superintendent of the Grosse Pointe School District was also a presenter during the workshop. We were excited to have their support for the students.
Judge Lynne Pierce was the moderator of the day-long program this year. Students from Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North and Heart Academy attended the workshop that included interviewing the elected officials, giving speeches, and participating in a mock election/campaign. The girls were awarded certificates for their portfolios as indication of their successful accomplishments.
LWVGP members served as facilitators at each of the tables to guide the students through a successful workshop.

The League is once again presenting its Running and Winning Workshop
Did you know that in 2011, women hold only 16.7% of the seats in the US Congress??
The League of Women Voters of Grosse Pointe believes that one way to reach greater representational parity for women is to develop leadership potential in our young women.
Be part of an exciting program to learn more about the challenges and rewards of holding public office.
Female politicians guide small group discussions during which students will interview local and state female elected officials, such as councilwomen, school board members, judges, and congresswomen, and learn about their experiences in seeking and holding public office.
Participants can explore full-time and part-time leadership positions in government.
Participants develop the skills needed to run for office such as networking, analyzing issues, and public speaking.
We reach out to the young women of the private and public schools in our area. Please encourage your daughters and their friends to attend. There is no charge for the high school students.
